5 Signs Your Laptop Needs Immediate Service
1. The Fan Runs Loud and Constantly
If your laptop fan spins at full speed even when you are just browsing the web, the cooling system is struggling. Dust buildup on the heatsink is the most common cause, and ignoring it can lead to thermal throttling or even permanent CPU damage.
2. Random Shutdowns or Restarts
Random shutdowns usually point to overheating, a failing battery, or a faulty power supply. If your laptop switches off while running on battery but works fine plugged in, the battery is most likely the culprit. If it shuts down either way, the motherboard or cooling system needs attention.
3. Slow Boot and App Launch Times
If your laptop takes more than two minutes to boot or apps take ages to open, the hard drive may be failing or you may simply need an SSD upgrade. An HDD to SSD upgrade is the single biggest performance boost you can give an old laptop.
4. Strange Noises or Burning Smell
Clicking sounds from the hard drive, grinding from the fan, or a burning smell are emergencies. Shut down the machine immediately and get it inspected. These are signs of hardware failure that can destroy data.
5. Screen Flickering or Dead Pixels
Flickering can be a loose display cable, a failing inverter, or a dying panel. Dead pixels spread over time. The sooner you get the display checked, the cheaper the repair tends to be.
What to Do Next
If you notice any of these signs, do not wait. Back up your data immediately and book a diagnostic check. Most of these issues are resolved in a single service visit and cost far less than a replacement.
